چکیده

System evaluations have been conducted in robotics and human-robot interaction for many years. These evaluations usually take place after a robot system has been designed and built as a way to validate the completed system. However, by performing evaluation only at the end of the development cycle, we lose opportunities to create systems with even better performance. Taking inspiration from human-computer interaction, we can design more effective robot systems for human-robot interaction by incorporating user feedback in the initial design phase. This talk will present a number of such formative evaluations from a variety of robotics domains, including assistive robotics and telepresence robot systems. BIOGRAPHY Dr. Holly Yanco is Professor and Associate Chair of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research interests include human-robot interaction, multi-touch computing, interface design, robot autonomy, fostering trust of autonomous systems, evaluation methods for human-robot interaction, and the use of robots in K-12 education to broaden participation in computer science. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, including a Career Award, the Army Research Office, Microsoft, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Dr. Yanco is the General Chair of the 2012 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction. She served on the Executive Council of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) from 2006-2009 and was the Symposium Chair for AAAI from 2002-2005. She was awarded senior membership in AAAI in 2011. Dr. Yanco has a PhD and MS in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a BA in Computer Science and Philosophy from Wellesley College. Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems

Research into intelligent systems and intelligent control is burgeoning. However, there is no consensus on how to define or measure an intelligent system. This lack of rigor hinders the ability to measure progress in the field and to compare different systems’ capabilities. We discuss some of the challenges and issues in defining performance metrics for intelligent systems and issue a call to a...

Normalized Model of Traffic Light Traits Based on Colored Pixels

Nowadays, because of the growing numbers of vehicles on streets and roads, the use of intelligent controlsystems to improve driving safety and health has become a necessity. To design and implement suchcontrol systems, having information about traffic light colors is essential. There are the wide variety oftraffic lights in terms of light intensity and color. Therefore it seems that design and ...

Building a Comprehensive Conceptual Framework for Power Systems Resilience Metrics

Recently, the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters (extreme events), which have a high-impact low-frequency (HILF) property, are increased. These disasters can lead to extensive outages, damages, and costs in electric power systems. A power system must be built with “resilience” against disasters, which means its ability to withstand disasters efficiently while ensuring the ...

Sustainable Supplier Selection by a New Hybrid Support Vector-model based on the Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm

For assessing and selecting sustainable suppliers, this study considers a triple-bottom-line approach, including profit, people and planet, and regards business operations, environmental effects along with social responsibilities of the suppliers. Diverse metrics are acquainted with measure execution in these three issues. This study builds up a new hybrid intelligent model, namely COA-LS-SVM, ...

A Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents

Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....
